The exhibition is ongoing in SECU Collection Hall, with new works from the Collection constantly added to it.
A national team of scholars and experts in the field worked with the Museum to develop the new interpretation and exhibition installation. Its thematic and contextual focuses are informed by artistic principles exemplified by Black Mountain College.
Black Mountain College’s principles offered an opportunity for a unique, place-based installation because of the college’s relevance to Western North Carolina and its influence on national and international art communities. The project presents the multifaceted historical and contemporary stories of art and culture in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia within the broader context of American aesthetic development.
The exhibition considers multiple and sometimes intersecting narratives in American art and provides a narrative framework for visitors to interact with and experience works from the Museum’s holdings. Themes including ‘Time & Place,’ ‘Experiments in Material & Form,’ and ‘Collaboration & Interdisciplinary Dialogue’ frame the exhibition.
