René Magritte’s ‘The Hidden Symbol’ Makes Its Japanese Debut

René Magritte’s 1928 painting ‘The Hidden Symbol’ is being shown in Japan for the first time. The work remains on view through September 13, 2026.

The presentation arrives with a concise account of the Belgian artist’s practice: Magritte repeatedly used familiar things in combinations that could not exist in reality to question what it means to see. ‘The Hidden Symbol’, dated 1928, is identified as a first Japanese presentation within the current exhibition.

The exhibition also includes paintings by artists from Japan and abroad. Its stated aim is to awaken viewers’ thought and imagination, while prompting them to reconsider how the world itself is seen.
