The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM) has launched the Fondo Débora Arango, a new initiative intended to move the Colombian artist’s legacy beyond preservation alone and into active research, mediation and circulation. The programme seeks to bring her work to new publics, languages and contemporary debates while supporting its continued study and care.
The fund will support research, conservation, mediation and circulation, with the museum also aiming to broaden contemporary readings of Arango’s work and connect it with educational, cultural and social contexts inside and outside the museum. It is open to contributions of any amount and to participation by institutional partners.
MAMM describes Arango’s work as a living field of conversation, friction and collective learning. The initiative is designed to create encounters among researchers, artists, students and diverse publics, extending the ways her work can be read rather than treating it as a fixed heritage. The museum presents this work as part of its public role and its engagement with modern and contemporary art.
The launch builds on what MAMM says has been more than 40 years of sustained research, conservation and circulation around Arango’s work. According to the museum, that activity has resulted in more than 70 solo exhibitions and more than 25 group exhibitions dedicated to the artist. Her work has circulated in Colombia and abroad, including in Bogotá, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Manizales, Pereira and Montería, as well as in Spain, Mexico, Belgium, Venezuela, the United States and Chile.
Rafael Tamayo, MAMM’s director, characterises Arango as “incómoda, lúcida, radical”—uncomfortable, lucid and radical—and says she continues to challenge the present. He describes the fund’s purpose as taking her work into new territories, publics and languages while protecting its preservation and contemporary force.
With the Fondo Débora Arango, MAMM is inviting individuals, organisations and institutions to join a collective effort to keep the artist’s voice in circulation and in conversation with current debates.
