Gala Porras-Kim and curator Natalia Valencia Arango will hold a free public conversation on Friday 11 September at 10 a.m. in Sala A at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín. The event accompanies ‘El movimiento de un registro fluvial’, Porras-Kim’s first solo exhibition in Colombia.
The pair will speak about the artist’s work, including the histories and processes behind it, as well as the curatorial thinking that articulates the works in the exhibition space. Their discussion will address how museums, archives and structures of power construct narratives around cultural objects.
Born in Bogotá in 1984 and now living and working between Los Angeles and London, Porras-Kim examines historical material culture through conservation and shifting frameworks of meaning. Her work follows the institutional taxonomies used to classify cultural objects, proposing other ways of relating to material histories within and beyond institutions. These approaches recognise the multiple actors and complex contexts involved in the existence of such objects.
Valencia Arango, also born in Bogotá in 1984 and based in London, has worked as Associate Curator of Estancia Femsa Casa Barragán in Mexico City. Her curatorial projects have included work with the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in Mexico City, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, L’appartement 22 in Rabat, CAPC in Bordeaux and AIT in Tokyo. She has also edited Terremoto in Mexico City and South as A State of Mind in Athens, and was an associate researcher in Latin American art at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
