The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna will resume its English-language focus on masterpieces from its collection on Friday 11 September at 4pm, turning to major Emilian painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Conducted in English, the September appointment will illustrate some of the most significant paintings from those two centuries in the museum’s collection.

Guercino features in the announcement’s account of seventeenth-century painting. The museum says that he renewed the artistic path established in Bologna by the Carracci, Reni, Albani and Domenichino, citing ‘San Sebastiano curato da Irene’ and ‘Sibilla con cartiglio’ among his masterpieces.

The eighteenth-century works named for the focus bring Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Marcantonio Franceschini and Vittorio Maria Bigari into view. Crespi’s ‘Scena di cortile’ is described as ironic and popular, while Franceschini’s ‘Stagioni’ is also included in the programme.

Bigari’s ‘Convito di Baldassarre’, characterised by the museum as scenographic, completes the group of eighteenth-century examples announced for the session.
