The Allen Memorial Art Museum has introduced ‘Teaching Space: Learning Through the Collection’, a dedicated installation for object-based teaching during the academic year. On view in the Ripin Gallery in Oberlin from July 25, 2026, through May 23, 2027, the presentation highlights the museum’s role as an extension of the classroom.
The installation complements two courses taught by Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History Joe Bucciero: ‘Realism: Art and Politics in Europe, 1848–1968’ in fall 2026 and ‘Mysticism and Modernism, 1850–1950’ in spring 2027. Students will use the displayed artworks to examine art’s connections to industrialization and political revolution, as well as the development of modern art alongside esoteric thought and practices.
Pablo Picasso’s 1904 etching ‘Le Repas Frugal’ is included in the Teaching Space. The presentation is organized by Bucciero, Emily French, Curator of Academic Programs, and Sam Adams, Ellen Johnson ’33 Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, with assistance from Asher Colvin (OC 2026).
