The Ogunquit Museum of American Art will close for the 2026 season on Sunday, November 1, two weeks earlier than previously planned, for renovation and modernization work on its existing facility. The museum plans to reopen on April 23, 2027.
The project centres on OMAA’s original 1952 building, designed by architect Charles S. Worley as a purpose-built home for American art overlooking the Atlantic. Renovation plans include climate stabilization, gallery lighting, security and other systems supporting collection care and the museum’s ability to secure loans for future exhibitions.
OMAA previously announced a strategic partnership with Kevin Daly Architects and Reed Hildebrand, which created a concept plan for the museum’s renovation in 2024. The work is intended to preserve the building’s historic architecture and architectural integrity while updating its facilities.
The museum will remain open through November 1, when visitors can experience its 2026 exhibitions and seaside sculpture park before renovation work begins.
“As we approach our 75th anniversary in 2028, we have an opportunity to preserve what is distinctive about OMAA while preparing the Museum for the future,” said David Cunningham, the museum’s executive director.
