The Detroit Institute of Arts is presenting ‘Guests of Honor: Art of Faith from the Jewish Museum, New York,’ a selection of Jewish ceremonial objects installed throughout the museum’s encyclopedic collection. The exhibition remains on view at the DIA in Detroit through January 3, 2027.
The presentation brings together objects dating from the 1400s to the early 1900s. The source material does not identify individual works, makers, materials or countries of origin, but describes the selection as drawn from the Jewish Museum in New York and focused on Jewish ceremonial art.
Rather than placing the objects in a single dedicated gallery, the DIA has distributed them across its collection displays. The arrangement situates the historical material within the museum’s broader presentation of art and objects, which spans multiple cultures and periods. The DIA describes its collection as vast and encyclopedic.
‘Guests of Honor’ is one of several exhibitions and collection presentations currently listed by the Detroit museum. Other displays include ‘Folk Art,’ a new gallery in the American Wing; ‘Reimagine African American Art,’ a reinstallation tracing African American art from the 1800s through the 1980s; and two additional ‘Guests of Honor’ presentations, devoted to Frederic Church’s ‘Cotopaxi’ and armor associated with Juan van der Hamen y León’s ‘Portrait of Jean de Croÿ, 2nd Count of Solre.’
The Detroit Institute of Arts is located at 5200 Woodward Avenue. General admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, as well as for DIA members. For other visitors, the museum lists adult admission at $20, senior and college-student admission at $10, and admission of $8 for visitors ages 6 to 17; children age five and under are admitted free.
Museum hours listed by the DIA are Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is scheduled to remain on view through January 3, 2027.
