Anita Rogers Gallery will present ‘Dust Do Shine,’ a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Robert Szot, from September 23 through October 31, 2026. The exhibition will be held at the gallery’s space at 494 Greenwich Street, Ground Floor, in New York City, with an opening reception scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, from 6 to 8pm.
The exhibition is Szot’s fourth solo presentation with Anita Rogers Gallery. According to the gallery, the new body of work represents a development in the artist’s practice, introducing larger forms, greater restraint and more defined spatial structures. The paintings balance areas of intensity with quieter passages, and bold color with open sections that allow for reflection.
Szot builds the works through layers of oil, metal leaf, charcoal and repeated revision. The gallery describes a process of adding, obscuring, removing and revisiting elements rather than beginning with a fixed image. Fragments of charcoal and drawing, buried passages of color, scraped paint and weathered edges remain visible across the surfaces.
A central grouping in the exhibition is formed by three paintings measuring 74 inches in height: ‘High Looks,’ ‘Arcadia’ and ‘August Complex.’ The works share a scale and structural approach while presenting distinct visual qualities. ‘High Looks’ is characterized by electric chromatic density, while ‘Arcadia,’ the largest work in the exhibition at more than eight feet wide, has an expansive, gold-toned surface. ‘August Complex’ offers a more concentrated arrangement of color and form.
Other works listed for the exhibition include ‘Wonders Greatly Reduced,’ an 80-by-70-inch oil, metal leaf and charcoal painting on linen; ‘Knockdowns,’ measuring 74 by 58 inches and made with the same materials on linen; and ‘Atwater,’ a 25-by-30.5-inch work on paper. The works on paper extend the exhibition’s material language at a smaller scale, bringing together buried structure, damaged color and the tension between immediacy and restraint.
The gallery says that reflective surfaces in works such as ‘Arcadia’ and ‘Wonders Greatly Reduced’ function not simply as decorative effects, but as sites of interruption and light. Across the exhibition, layers are built up, altered and partly revealed, leaving the history of each work visible rather than smoothing the surfaces into a final resolution.
Szot has exhibited extensively across the United States, including in New York, Los Angeles and Texas. His paintings and works on paper are held in private and public collections, including the Credit Suisse Collection. He lives and works in Los Angeles. Anita Rogers Gallery will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm during the exhibition’s run.
