The Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Florida, has paid tribute to Yayoi Kusama, who has died at the age of 97. The museum posted a short message on X on 27 August 2026 saying it was saddened to hear of her death, and described her as an artist considered to have anticipated many aspects of Pop, Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, with an obsessive interest in proliferating patterns and repetitive shapes.
The post is illustrated with a work from the museum's own collection. The caption the Harn publishes with the image identifies it as Kusama's Nets-Infinity (TWOS), 2004, acquired by museum purchase with funds provided by the David A. Cofrin Art Acquisition Endowment and friends of the Harn Museum. The museum's website gives the medium as acrylic on canvas; the painting sets red over white in a repeating net-like pattern, one of the net compositions Kusama returned to across her career.
Kusama's death was announced on 27 August by her studio and the Yayoi Kusama Foundation, which said she had died on 14 August in a hospital in Tokyo.
The Harn, which is part of the University of Florida, gave no further details and did not announce a memorial event, a display of the painting or other programming connected with the artist's death. Its tribute appeared only on the museum's social-media account; the Harn's own news pages carry nothing on the subject.
