Jennifer and Kevin McCoy to Present ‘ReLensing’ at bitforms Gallery

Jennifer and Kevin McCoy will present ‘ReLensing,’ a solo exhibition examining the technologies and physical systems that shape vision, at bitforms gallery in New York from September 10 to October 10, 2026. The exhibition will bring together sculpture, video and installation, with an opening reception scheduled for September 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition takes its title from the artists’ interest in the instruments through which seeing is constructed and reconstructed. The works move between the optics of glass and cameras, the effects of shadows and the operations of machine-learning models. Rather than treating technology as an invisible tool, the exhibition makes image-making mechanisms visible as part of the work’s subject and material form.

Among the works listed for the exhibition is ‘Lens Organic’ (2023), a black-and-white video with sound in which a forest appears to warp into a sphere against a changing landscape. The work connects the familiar imagery of nature with the unstable movement of a camera passing through it, presenting vision as mediated rather than transparent. Also included is ‘Crystal Films #6 (tank)’ (2026), which combines glass and silent color video.

The ‘Crystal Films’ series extends the McCoys’ longstanding engagement with cinema and its supporting apparatus. The artists’ sculptural glass forms are produced through 3D printing and positioned over screens showing fragments from Orson Welles’s film ‘The Lady from Shanghai.’ The moving image is refracted through the glass, recalling an earlier cinematic condition in which projection depended on the physical arrangement of light and optical materials. The series draws on Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the “crystal-image,” in which present experience and preserved memory become inseparable within the same image.

Other works approach image production through different kinds of apparatus. In ‘Ghost Ship,’ the mechanisms behind a moving apparition remain exposed: ordinary objects, shadow and light work together to create an illusion in real space. ‘Depth Model,’ a large-scale acrylic painting made with a custom-built plotter, begins with a passage from Herman Melville’s ‘Moby-Dick.’ Images of whaling ships, including interpretations of the fictional Pequod, were generated with Stable Diffusion and translated into paint by the plotter. The work brings literary description, machine-generated imagery and the vocabulary of painting into one surface.

Jennifer McCoy, born in 1968 in Sacramento, California, and Kevin McCoy, born in 1967 in Seattle, Washington, live and work in Brooklyn. Their interdisciplinary practice spans moving image, software, drawing, painting and installation, and has examined how emerging technologies shape cultural narratives, systems of knowledge and everyday perception. Their work has been exhibited at institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the British Film Institute Southbank in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their work is held in collections including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. ‘ReLensing’ will remain on view at bitforms gallery from September 10 through October 10, 2026.
