Lesley Vance will return to Xavier Hufkens in Brussels this autumn with ‘Lesley Vance’, an exhibition described by the gallery as her largest to date and her most expansive presentation in Europe. The exhibition will bring together a new body of paintings and works on paper in a range of scales, opening at the gallery’s St-Georges venue on 19 November and continuing through 1 February 2027.
Vance’s presentation will focus on abstraction and its expressive possibilities. According to Xavier Hufkens, the works pursue this through fluid forms, luminous colour and a carefully balanced relationship between improvisation and control. The exhibition’s scale will allow paintings and works on paper to be shown together across the venue, although the gallery has not released a detailed checklist or installation plan.
Born in 1977 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Vance lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work is held in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.
The Brussels exhibition extends an established relationship between the artist and Xavier Hufkens. The gallery’s exhibition records list previous solo presentations of Vance’s work at its St-Georges venue in 2012, 2014 and 2017, as well as ‘Slipstream’ at Van Eyck in 2021 and ‘Fired and painted’, a joint presentation with Ken Price, in 2023–24. The new exhibition marks her return with a substantially expanded presentation.
Vance’s practice will be represented through works that move between different scales and media while maintaining the gallery’s stated emphasis on abstraction. The combination of paintings and works on paper places distinct forms of mark-making and colour alongside one another, but the available exhibition information does not identify individual works or specify the techniques used in the new series.
‘Lesley Vance’ will open on Thursday 19 November from 5 to 9pm at St-Georges in Brussels. Xavier Hufkens is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm. The exhibition will remain on view until 1 February 2027.
